Chatsbury
Chatsbury, 6-8 Ithaca Road Elizabeth Bay
13 Mar 2025
Chatsbury built 1938, is a delightfully different Art Deco block of apartments. Chatsbury is an unusual name and may derive from the farming locality in NSW, 33km north of Goulburn, population 91. It was common for owners of country farms to name their city properties after their country estates. The exterior is freckled brick with castellations, useful for a mediaeval castle perhaps ?! It is not symmetrical and uses typical Art Deco curved balconies. Its entrance foyer is original with a mosaic tiled floor, wooden letter boxes, house phones and a clock.
Curves were frequently used in Art Deco design, a signature element, with Chatsbury using curves on the balconies, the interior and in the entrance hall.
